Volvo Car UK Ltd has today announced their support for six of Britain’s top sailors; Olympic Gold Medallists, Ben Ainslie, Shirley Robertson, and Iain Percy, Athens 2004 medal hopeful, Paul Goodison and Volvo Ocean Race skippers, Neal and Lisa McDonald, as ‘Team Volvo for life’.
‘Team Volvo for life’ is an inspirational team of individuals who represent the very best of British sailing talent. Their wealth of experience embraces success from Olympic Sailing to the Volvo Ocean Race.
Within ‘Team Volvo for life’, Volvo will be a title sponsor for Ben Ainslie and Shirley Robertson’s Olympic campaigns for Athens 2004 and beyond.
“Volvo’s support has been the turning point in our bid for Olympic success, allowing us to prepare for winning without compromise,” said Ben Ainslie. “We’ll now be in much better stead to qualify for, and compete at, Athens 2004.”
“Volvo has a strong history within our sport at both elite and at grassroots level,” said Shirley Robertson. “They understand the needs of the elite sailor, the preparation needed to win, and the ongoing attention to detail required in order to get a result – its the perfect partnership.”
As ‘Team Volvo for life’ members, the sailors are supported by Volvo to help them achieve their ultimate sailing goals. They will also work with the next generation of British sailors, supporting the all-new Volvo RYA Keelboat Sailing Programme, providing training to those in the scheme.
In addition they will also support Volvo’s continued support of grassroots sailing through the Volvo RYA Champion Club Scheme and the Volvo Musto Optimist Sailing Programme. The Champion Club scheme is a programme that rewards clubs who develop and encourage youth membership and youth race training.
“Volvo’s desire is for ‘Team Volvo for life’ members to achieve the ultimate sailing accolades, but we also hope they will inspire young sailors to follow in their footsteps with the same passion and determination,” said James Kendall, Sponsorship Manager, Volvo Car UK Ltd.
“We are very pleased that Volvo is making a significant contribution alongside the National Lottery in supporting our elite sailors,” said John Derbyshire, Racing Manager at the Royal Yachting Association. “It’s also very important that our best sailors continue to impart their skills and experience to the next generation of British sailors. British sailing is currently a major sporting success, and we want to ensure that this continues in the future.”
