CNN Mainsail – May 2013

This month Shirley and the team head to Lanzarote and have exclusive access to the all female round the world racing unit as they prepare to take on the world and beat some of the best male crews on the planet

The last time that an all female crew entered the Volvo Ocean Race (toughest fully crewed race around the world) was over a decade ago. Since then this ocean marathon has become more physical, more intense and raced at a faster pace.

It was a tense time for the short listed sailors who were in the Canary Islands this Spring, after the four months of training it was time to find out who had made to cut and would be named as the first five crew members of Team SCA’s round the world race team and who would not.

Mainsail travels to Lanzerote to train with a round-the-world race crew as
they prepare for the Volvo Ocean Race.

Shirley Robertson explores the physical challenges of racing against men
and speaks with Britain’s Sam Davies.

Shirley Robertson looks at the selection process for those hoping to join
