The 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race is nine legs and 38,000 miles of relentless pace and pressure. The last edition of the race in 2011-12 had become an arms race with a high rate of attrition, something had to change to make this challenging offshore race more attractive to sponsors, investors and teams, so a new one design format was created.
It is now all about the sailors and consistency, the one design format is a game changer with teams racing insight of each other and switching positions constantly, Leg four saw the top three boats finish eight minutes apart with MAPFRE finally taking the win from Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Dongfeng Race Team respectively.
As the fleet take on leg five and head into the Southern Ocean it’s a wild ride for all, with wipe out’s throughout the fleet, a broken mast and some unforgettable rounding’s of the ultimate land mark ‘Cape Horn’.
