The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust takes young people aged between 8-18 sailing to help them regain their confidence, on their way to recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illness.
In 2005 Shirley became a patron and has been actively involved whenever she can, both sailing with the young people and promoting the work of the Trust, including speaking at fundraising balls and other events.

The ultimate purpose of the Winning Scots programme is to develop more role models who can inspire, encourage, motivate and educate other young Scots.
Shirley works as a mentor in the Champions in Schools programme. Mentors share their experiences of how they made it to the highest level of their sport, and are well placed to guide and motivate the young athletes and help them pursue and achieve their ambitions.
