Sail Training International (STI) is a registered charity established to develop and educate young people – regardless of nationality, culture, religion, gender or social background – through the sail training experience. The Tall Ships Races 2013 is organised by STI.
Shirley became a global support of STI in 2013 to promote the youth development potential of sail training and the famous international Tall Ship Races.

The Oman Sail Women’s Programme supported by Bank Muscat plans to instil confidence and teach valuable, transferable life skills while also creating jobs and unique opportunities for the nation’s women.
In 2011 Shirley became a project mentor invited by Oman Sail as an inspiring example of the opportunities sailing can offer a woman, Shirley will share her knowledge and expertise with the new generation of female Omani sailors.

Since the Athens Olympics in 2004, Robertson played a major role in bringing the Olympics to London in 2012 by acting as a key ambassador and athlete delegate in Singapore. The Ambassadors were an integral part of Team GB prior to and during London 2012 helping British athletes and the wider Team GB to achieve their Olympic ambitions.
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust takes young people aged between 8-18 sailing to help them regain their confidence, on their way to recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illness.
In 2005 Shirley became a patron and has been actively involved whenever she can, both sailing with the young people and promoting the work of the Trust, including speaking at fundraising balls and other events.

The ultimate purpose of the Winning Scots programme is to develop more role models who can inspire, encourage, motivate and educate other young Scots.
Shirley works as a mentor in the Champions in Schools programme. Mentors share their experiences of how they made it to the highest level of their sport, and are well placed to guide and motivate the young athletes and help them pursue and achieve their ambitions.
